The Leftovers’ Amy Brenneman: Laurie’s “not So Fragile” Anymore – Seattlepi.com

It was almost like, “Oh, don’t commit to this.” Partly the reason I stay, I think, is because I’m kind of of the opinion that I don’t know where this thing is going. I don’t totally trust Patti, but I don’t want to leave Meg behind. So, it’s dovetailed into a lot of reasons that I stay. Damon had always described the [Meg-and-Laurie] story line as a little bit A Star Is Born. She starts out tentative, but then actually gets more Jihadist and enthusiastic than me. So it’s sort of, “Be careful what you wish for,” and like, “Oh, my God, she’s really committed.” But I can’t leave her here. Summer Preview: Get scoop on your favorite returning shows Patti smiles when Laurie blows the whistle.

Not Just Comcast: 19 Stories From Call Center Hell

I could not give them a notice – although I had tried quitting twice and they talked me into staying a little longer both times, so they had to have known it was coming. I left with no other job to rely on. I went through five weeks of unemployment before landing a part-time retail job paying about 60% of the previous hourly rate I had been at. Best decision I’ve ever made. Not having money, being unemployed, scrambling to find a job… Nowhere near as bad as continuing to work for that bank. The customers weren’t a problem – I can handle an irate voice. It was the company.

Op-ed: Why The Gay Panic Defense Must Go | Advocate.com

The message was clear: The shooter thought it was perfectly fine to fire a gun at someone because he didnt like her gender identity. Exactly one month earlier, in Atlanta, two men violently attacked two transgender women on Atlantas public transit system. One of the attackers, Luther L. Thomas, told the media, These guys [referring to the transgender women] came on to me. As a lawyer, I find their excuses inexcusable. As an American, it is a wake-up call that its past time to end the so-called panic defense. The LGBT Bar is working to replicate our advances in California across the country. By working with state attorneys general, and state legislators, we know we can put an end to this unconscionable courtroom tactic.

Emily Nussbaum: “high Maintenance,” “my Mad Fat Diary” Reviews : The New Yorker

Then the show streams for free on the indie video-sharing site Vimeo. Although all the current installments were mostly funded by the shows creators, the actor Ben Sinclair and his wife, the casting director Katja Blichfeld, Vimeo has just announced that the Web site will provide financial backing for upcoming ones, as part of a move into a Netflix-style production model. Yet despite its D.I.Y. origins High Maintenance doesnt feel like a self-indulgent pet projectinstead, its more like a shoebox that opens into Narnia. Freed of the constraints of thirty-minute or one-hour formulas, the episodes are luxurious and twisty and humane, radiating new ideas about storytelling. In each episode, Sinclair, a shaggy guy who tends to get cast in crazy homeless-dude roles on Law & Order, plays the nameless dealer.

Box Office: ‘Lucy’ To Overpower ‘Hercules’ And ‘Apes’

One comp for Lucy is Salt the female actioner starring Angelina Jolie (although Salt was PG-13 and Lucy is R-rated). Salt opened to $36M in 2010. Meanwhile, Hercules is on IMAX screens until they get pushed aside for Guardians of the Galaxy starting next weekend which will have the big screens at least three weekends. This computer problem at AMC happened before on the Wednesday of the July 4th holiday when the glitch caused technical difficulties transmitting hourly numbers, cutting off reports from 4 PM. to 3 AM, which sent everyone into a slight panic. Kansas City-based AMC Theatres (which includes Loews) has 341 locations and 4,945 screens and operates eight of the 10 highest-grossing theaters in the country. It also boasts the biggest market share in the countrys top three cities of New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, so not getting their numbers transmitted is a big deal.

Drc Troops Repel Attack On Kinshasa Military Base

In an interview with VOA’s French to Africa Service, government spokesman Lambert Mende said a “small band” of attackers tried to enter Camp Tshatshi in Kinshasa but were stopped. He said authorities have not yet determined whether the attackers were “terrorists or thieves.” A written message on DRC state television told viewers there was “no need to panic.” Mende said troops were patrolling the city to reassure citizens. Gunmen loyal to an evangelical Christian pastor who is opposed to President Joseph Kabila assaulted the same base and briefly captured the state TV station in December of last year. The government said more than 100 people were killed as its forces repelled those attacks. Political tension has been rising in the DRC amid speculation that President Kabila may try to change the constitution and run for a third term in 2016.

Angst over the highest military toll since the 2006 Lebanon war now mixes with a cocktail of emotions: on one hand, a strong current of determination to press on with efforts to end the rocket fire from Gaza; on the other, the sinking feeling that a quagmire is at hand. “It’s ugly and it’s no walk in the park,” said Alon Geller, a 42-year-old legal intern from central Israel. “But we have to finish the operation. If we stop now before reaching our goals, the soldiers will have died in vain.” But the Haaretz newspaper warned against mission creep and the “wholesale killing” of Palestinian civilians. “The soft Gaza sand … could turn into quicksand,” it said in its editorial Monday.

In June, three Israeli teenagers were abducted and discovered dead after an 18-day search . A Palestinian boy was soon kidnapped and brutally murdered in an apparent revenge killing . His cousin, a Palestinian-American, was allegedly severely beaten by Israeli police. But only Palestinian children have been killed following the teenagers’ deaths. Israel says Hamas fighters are hiding among Palestinian civilians. But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu only added fuel to the fire in the debate over civilian deaths when he said on Sunday on CNN that Hamas is using the images of “telegenically dead” civilians to further damage Israel’s public image.

World Bank: Boko Haram Stalls African Aid Projects

In northern Cameroon, a high-poverty area thats vulnerable to natural disasters, a $108 million grant is stagnating instead of rehabilitating embankments, dams and irrigation systems and improving disaster-preparedness. Diop met with Cameroon President Paul Biya to discuss how Boko Haram has created panic and slowed the execution of some World Bank-financed projects. Diop told VOA they talked about economic development and how to increase the conditions of peace and stability and try also to see how we can strengthen all the social protection programs to alleviate poverty. Governor complains Midjiyawa Bakari governs a far northern region of Cameroon, where World Bank grants aim to restore rice production and provide food and income for the areas 3 million-plus residents. But he told VOA the projects had suffered because most beneficiaries and aid workers are leaving, fearing the violent Islamist group and its regular assaults on villages. The governor said its time to address the insecurity in north Cameroon. He adds that residents have found weapons buried in some towns and are investigating their origins. Such situations scare people from working in the north, he concludes.

In a poll conducted among Jewish Israelis by right-wing newspaper Israel Hayom on July 20, 80 percent responded that they supported the ground incursion and 71 percent said they would even like to see it expanded. This same fervor was on display at a peace rally on July 19 in central Tel Aviv, where a right-wing crowd showed up to out-shout peaceniks, fly Israeli flags and sing national songs. Right-wing activists showed up to protest a peace rally in Tel Aviv on July 12. Photo by Simone Wilson A 27-year-old student at the counter-protest named Lidor told the Journal: I myself am much more emotional because we are on the ground now. But its the only solution. You wont be able to stop Hamas unless youre on the ground. (He and others at the rally did not wish to give their full names, due to wartime tensions.) The end result on a strategic level, Lidor said, has to be the disarmament and the fall of the reign of terror of Hamas. Amnon Ilan, a lifelong Tel Aviv resident in his early 80s who has served in every Israeli war since the War of Independence, carried a sign directed at Israels leading left-wing party. People of Meretz, your kibbutzim are also under fire, he had written. Dont give backwind to our enemies. These kibbutzim the sleepy green farming communities that line Israels border with Gaza are nobodys idea of a warzone.
